Today I’m super thrilled to share that I’m joining LinkedIn Learning as an instructor.
Over the past few years as a software engineer, I have always loved to share knowledge and empower tech newbies with relevant skills required to make other people’s lives easier, faster, better, and more fun, beyond technology as a profession.
I have a lot to share with you
But first,
How did You get here?
This and many more questions have sprung up in the past few weeks since I got my contract with LinkedIn.
Today and more than ever I’m looking back to see myself behind the monitor writing all kinds of software with a major goal in mind, all I wanted to do is build software that’d solve real-life problems.
In 2017, I joined a software company in Lagos after my NYSC(A program set up by the Nigerian government during the military regime to involve Nigerian graduates in nation-building and the development of the country). I worked as a .NET developer for a couple of months, worked with c#, .NET, HTML, CSS… Lots of technologies and tools.
In 2018, I picked up a new role in another company, this time around, it was a startup. I spend some time writing core backend applications using python, Django and other interesting technologies.
I tried to re-focus my career on mobile development and moved to another company in 2018 where I started building native apps with java. As the only dev on the mobile team, I recommended React Native to my employer for cross-platform development which we used for quite a number of projects before we switched to the Flutter framework.
Starting off my career as a newbie while I was in school was a pretty rough journey(That’s a story for another day). There were several roadblocks while I was trying to position myself in the industry. So I started a coding school, CodeNest to solve major career problems for people looking to start a life in tech. I didn’t want newbies to go through that same rough route. I’m glad lots of people have gone through our programs and gotten job offers after graduation.
As I said earlier, I love to share knowledge with people who have demonstrated some level of passion for building a meaningful life in the tech space.
I believe joining LinkedIn Learning is unarguably one of the best moves I have made this year!
How did I find myself at LinkedIn Learning as an Instructor?
I worked as an Independent Contractor with a U.S based company, Pluralsight in 2018 as a Subject Matter Expert in Android and Web technologies, you may be wondering why I didn’t mention it earlier, well I saved the gist for a later time. Now you know right? Lol
During this period, I built meaningful relationships with my team members and managers. Most of them enjoyed working with me. I was honoured to have received kind feedback from most of them.
So I had this amazing manager who I worked with at Pluralsight but she eventually joined LinkedIn after I had left the company, her name is Christa. Before she joined Linkedin, I had reached out to her to catch up with her.
Sometime in March 2022, she spoke to me about an opportunity at LinkedIn learning, we had a quick call to discuss it. She mentioned repeatedly how she enjoyed working with me during my days at Pluralsight. And that it’d be great to work with me again on some projects at LinkedIn.
In short, Christa initiated an application for Learning Instructor role on my behalf and gave me all the necessary support throughout my interview and audition phase.
Truth be told, having a good work relationship and ethics is essential. You never know who’d recommend you for that dream job you have always wanted.
In my case, I never had to fill out a form to apply for this opportunity, she was very instrumental throughout the process.
How does it feel as a LinkedIn Learning Instructor?
I have always wanted to tell millions of people about what’s new in technology and how to use new tools to make the world a better place for everyone.
Being an instructor is indeed a platform for me to share experience, knowledge, and learning motivation with more people without being physically present in all the countries.
For me, that’s the meaning of becoming an instructor beyond the title and all the excitement.
What’s next?
Keep breaking grounds, of course!
I’m super excited to say I have much work to do here, creating new courses require a lot of time to meet the level of quality and standard at LinkedIn.
I hope this is the beginning of a long-term phase where I can keep learning a lot and keep inspiring young people in the tech industry beyond the shores of Africa.
I have a lot of exciting things lined up for the year, I’ll keep you updated, don’t worry!
